The Hot Seat

“This is the hot seat of the moment where I write my songs. There always is a chair. Usually facing out a window. Cruel and confortable. I sit through it all, triumphs and defeats, day after day, month after month, year after year.” -Gus

On writing “One Eyed Jack Pt. III (Epilogue)”

”One Eyed Jack Pt. III (Epilogue) was an opportunity for me to expand upon the One Eyed Jack mythos. Although I didn’t realize it as I was writing it (well, not really writing it physically. I don’t really do that much anymore and most all the lyrics I just come up with off the top of my head as I play the guitar), I had the lyrics:

And in the court the cat it kneaded

The jester’s arm and left it bleeding

Of reaching hands that aim to strangle

And climbing ivy that meant to tangle

The thickest walls and strongest bricks

Came tumbling down all in a blip

and then I realized that the bricks I was talking about must be the bricks One Eyed Jack was stacking when he hurt his back.” -Gus

Behind-the-scenes: One Eyed Jack Pt. I and II

“Here are some photos taken during the shoot for the ‘One Eyed Jack Pt. I and II (The Interrogation/The Otherside)’ video. The video was shot in my dad’s garage in Hawaii where all the props just happened to be lying around. Next week, we’ll be releasing a short behind-the-scenes video where we discuss our process more in depth.” -Gus

The Recording Of ”One Eyed Jack Pt. I and II (The Interrogation/The Otherside)”

”Here are four photos from the recording of ‘One Eyed Jack Pt. I and II (The Interrogation/The Otherside)’. Here I am in the first photo with my dear friend Sam Woy at Mixart where we tracked the guitar and drums. Then in picture 2 and 3, Mark Lawson and Estée Preda are creating some railroad sound effects with a piece of metal we found at Studio Sud Ouest out in the hallway. Last but not least is a picture of Josh Toal recording the bass line which is one of my favorite parts of the song. Recording is fun!” -Gus

The ‘One Eyed Jack (Trilogy)’ is out!

We are pleased to announced the release of One Eyed Jack Pt. I and II (The Interrogation/The Otherside) and One Eyed Jack Pt. III (Epilogue)! The songs are available on all streaming platforms. Listen here.

”One Eyed Jack is a railroad song, of the kind that I would imagine a group of men singing while they worked as they drove in the railroad spikes. The song starts with a Spanish-inquisition style interrogation and as the interrogee spills his beans, the legend of One Eyed Jack is slowly illuminated by his maniacal ravings. As time marches on, the legend of One Eyed Jack grows and grows until eventually he goes interdimentional.

It’s all a bit an exercise in storytelling and speaks to the tendency that mankind has to create deities, myths and legends out of the desire to believe in something, or maybe just to have something to tell around the campfire.

The video is a psychedelic neo-noir film Estée and I made where a detective (played by myself) tries to unravel the mystery of the One Eyed Jack cult, all donning eye patches and clad in Hawaiian shirts, by first, interrogating a One Eyed Jack devotee (also played by myself). Since most of the time, it’s only Estée and I making our videos, I sometimes have to Eddie Murphy all the characters.

The second part of the song takes the viewer through the mythical aspect of the story and how the tale spreads. Thanks to Katerine DM, we were able to illustrate Jack’s interdimentional travels with a beautiful 3D animation à la 2001: A Space Odyssey, if I do say so myself.” -Gus

Reminiscing

”A little over 4 years ago today, we were releasing the video for Patty Sees Her Soul off Death & Transfiguration, our very first video shot on film. Little did we know it would set us on the path we are on today, where this music project morphed into a full audio visual Gesamtkunstwerk.” -Gus
